It is 50 years today since Dick Tiger won the world
middleweight title from Fullmer at San Francisco's Candlestick Park.
The hectic
and fascinating backdrop to the staging of this bout is recounted in my book DICK TIGER: The Life and Times of a Boxing Immortal when meteorological conditions and
a World Series between the San Francisco Giants and the New York Yankees postponed the date twice.
But the ultimate postponement hovered
eerily as the Cuban Missile Crisis threatened to plunge the USA and the USSR into a thermonuclear exchange.
